Avril was a well-known sculptor. She did not row in her youth as her father disapproved of women rowing, so she did not become actively interested until after his death.

She was a member of Twickenham RC and regularly attended HWR and other regattas. Avril presented the trophy in 1996.

The event was known as Elite Coxless Fours until 2018.
